Laser Machining of Nickel Oxide–Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Composite for Surface Modification in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

چکیده

Laser machining of the nickel oxide–yttria-stabilized zirconia (NiO–YSZ) composite in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) may be an effective approach to enlarge electrode–electrolyte interface and improve cell performance. However, laser energy can cause thermal damage surface during machined operation. In this work, microstructure changes collateral caused by pulsed on sintered NiO–YSZ state-of-the-art SOFCs were evaluated using complementary analysis techniques. patterns consisting parallel tracks processed, varying parameters such as frequency beam density. The analyses evidenced a heat-affected zone (HAZ) limited around 2 µm with microcracking, porosity reduction, recrystallization. chemical composition, phase transformation YSZ mechanical properties at quite limited.

Self-Supporting Thin Yttria-Stabilised Zirconia Electrolytes for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Prepared by Laser Machining

A novel procedure to make self-supporting thin yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) membranes by laser machining is shown. We have used a galvanometric controlled laser beam to machine the surface of a conventional sintered YSZ plate and achieved thin areas up to 10 lm thick, but also maintaining thicker support beams to ensure the structural strength of the membrane. The outer areas of the plate a...

Micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cell based on a porous yttria-stabilized zirconia support

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising electrochemical energy conversion devices owing to their high power generation efficiency and environmentally benign operation. Micro-tubular SOFCs, which have diameters ranging from a few millimeters to the sub-millimeter scale, offer several advantages over competing SOFCs such as high volumetric power density, good endurance against thermal cyclin...

Spatiotemporal simulation of nickel oxide and carbon phases formation in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC)

The formation of secondary phases in the porous electrodes is a severe mechanism affecting the lifetime of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). It can occur via various chemical mechanisms and it has a significant influence on cell performance due to pore clogging and deactivation of active surfaces and triple-phase boundary (TPB). We present a modeling and simulation study of nickel oxide formation ...

ReaxFF reactive force field for solid oxide fuel cell systems with application to oxygen ion transport in yttria-stabilized zirconia.

We present the ReaxFF reactive force field developed to provide a first-principles-based description of oxygen ion transport through yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) membranes. All parameters for ReaxFF were optimized to reproduce quantum mechanical (QM) calculations on relevant condensed phase and cluster systems. We validated the use of ReaxFF for fuel cell applic...

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells for Transportation

The well-known compatibility of the SOFC with hydrocarbon fuels makes the solid oxide fuel cell a strong contender for transportation applications. Gasoline and diesel will continue to be the dominant fuels for decades to come. The 500 million automobiles, the existing fuel distribution system and the economic power of oil and automobile companies combined form a strong inertia in favour of liq...
